Searches are performed by entering either signs or words in the search field and then pressing enter or the "search"-button.

Set your cursor inside the search field and start typing the transliteration of a sign or word. Select now the desired sign/word from the drop-down list.
In the case of a search for signs, determinatives can also be entered via the "determinatives"-button.

The "order strict / loose"-switch determines whether the sequence of the entered signs/words should be considered in the search or not. If it is activated, placeholders may be inserted into the search query via the "add wildcard"-button. They can also be entered by typing a "?" question mark.

If you search for signs, the "exact spelling"-switch sets whether to search for exactly the selected sign variants, or whether to consider other variants as well.

Entering a "/" makes it possible to allow multiple signs or words in the search at a given position (for example "pꜣ / nꜣ sẖꜣ" finds attestations of both the singular and the plural).

The timeline depicts the periods which the Demotic script is traditionally divided into: Early Demotic (blue), early and late Middle Demotic (orange and yellow), and Late Demotic (green).

The histogram (graph) on top of the timeline shows the temporal distribution of the current results. Each vertical bar's width corresponds to an interval of 25 years.

You can narrow down the timeframe either by dragging the yellow circles, by entering a number in the input fields below the timeline, or by selecting a ruler from the drop-down list.

Each circle represents a location to which results are assigned.

The size of a circle shows the relation between the number of results at the corresponding location and the total number of results currently displayed.

Locations can be (de)selected by either clicking on the circles or by (de)selecting them in the drop-down list. Another way is to draw a rectangle with the right mouse button.

The results are arranged chronologically, and results belonging to the same inscription are grouped together.

The colors of the captions represent the time period a result belongs to. A click on a result's caption will open the digital edition of the corresponding text.
A click on a "image"-button on the other hand will open the image of the corresponding text.

A fading text indicates that a more extensive display is available. It can be activated by clicking on the text.
You can also move through a text by using the arrow-buttons next to the demotic text.

If the search field at the top of the page contains two or more words, a click on "search the TLA" will redirect you to the word combination search ('collocation search') of the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae.

If the search field contains just one word, a click on "search the TLA" will redirect you to the attestations of corresponding lemma in the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae.

If the search field at the top of the page contains one or more signs, a click on "search the TLA" will redirect you to spellings of lemmata in the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae that include the corresponding hieroglyphs.

At the same time, a click on "search Ramses Online" will redirect you to attestations of the corresponding hieroglyphs in Ramses Online - an annotated corpus of Late Egyptian.
